July round-up: On yer bike

Very sadly for us, Stephen Midlane, Committee member and Chair of our Heritage Committee, has left us for Bristol to be nearer his family. Our loss is their gain.

It's difficult to exaggerate what Stephen has achieved in his 7 years with the Friends and especially for the Heritage group. Being one of the editors of 'The Wandsworth Common Story' was just the beginning. The huge number of walks and talks he has dreamed up, planned and helped organise have kept hundreds of our members entertained and better informed, and he has inspired a strong team of volunteers who continue to work on projects like 'Common Memories' and the 'Lost Houses Project'. His energy seemed to know no bounds and he will leave a huge gap on the Heritage group, on the wider FoWC committee and in the personal lives of the many people who know and have worked with him, not least ourselves. He will be an incredibly hard act to follow, and we will miss him terribly, but we will do our best to carry on his amazing work.

We wish Stephen and Doris all the best in their new life in Bristol.
