This is a joint Friends/MAC website. The Management Advisory Committee has advised the Council on the Common’s management for over 30 years. The Friends are working with the MAC to engage the community in the protection, conservation and enhancement of the Common. Together, we aim to foster balanced use, mutual respect and understanding among all users.

A Common is an area of unenclosed, natural open space — often scrubland, grass and trees. Unlike a park, it is safeguarded by Act of Parliament. It is always owned by someone but other people can use it subject to the governing laws.

You and I have a right to roam and do things like picnic, exercise, relax and bird watch but NOT camp, light fires, barbecues or hold a festival or event or conduct a business without the owner’s permission.

Wandsworth Common today

The Common we see today is a haphazard collection of no fewer than twelve pieces of varying size, some of which are not thought of as Wandsworth Common even by many locals.

Find out more about the geography and history here

Take a look at our map, on sale for just £2 in the Skylark and Toast Rack Cafés, to familiarise yourself with its 177 acres.

Discover some of the areas you can explore around the Common, and their ecology and nature here - grasslands, meadows, acid grassland, woodland, ponds & lakes and the Scope.
